Richard has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFC25039) in the state of California for over 25 years and is also certified as a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for the United States Department of Transportation. He received his training in Theology (Master of Divinity) and Marriage and Family Counseling (Marriage and Family Ministries) at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena where he learned to integrate Psychological principles into a Biblical framework for helping others. After his licensure as an MFT in 1989, he later earned a certificate in Alcohol and Drug Studies from Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. Over the years he has worked with thousands of individuals, couples, and families to help them achieve the healing and wholeness that God desires for their lives.
Richard grew up in Long Beach, California and one of four siblings. Raised as a Presbyterian, he later wandered from this background but made a faith commitment at the age of fourteen. Since then he has been a member of a variety of churches such as Calvary Chapel, Vineyard, Evangelical Free, Baptist, non-denominational, and more recently, Saddleback church in Lake Forest. Over the years he has participated in leadership, small groups, missions, and teaching. Although Richard offers professional counseling to people of any background, many seek him out because of his extensive training and experience in the Christian faith.
Richard's approach with his clients is to provide practical, interactive guidance combined with compassion and support that addresses both the present difficulties a person is experiencing along with the issues that form the roots behind what is causing their current distress. Richard believes that understanding and changing the core thinking, feeling, and behavioral patterns that fuel present problems is what will lead to sustainable changes in your quality of life going forward. He actively seeks to build upon the client's understanding and experience of their Christian walk to move ahead in their lives.
Richard is a clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) and the American Association of Chrisitian Counselors (AACC). He as been married for 33 years and has two adult children.
